The Government today launched its Low Carbon Transition Plan - a route map towards achieving a 34% reduction in UK greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. In response, Ashok Sinha, Director of the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition said
Members of our coalition will welcome this announcement. Ed Miliband must be congratulated for at last offering a step-wise plan to tackling the UK’s carbon emissions. Whilst hugely needed, this plan is certainly not without faults, the biggest being the level of ambition. In the year of the Copenhagen Climate Summit - the most important talks in history - industrialised countries like the UK must commit to reducing their emissions by at least 40% if there is to be a good chance of keeping global warming under the danger threshold of 2 degrees C.
Other responses from the coalition included:
Robin Oakley, head of Greenpeace's climate and energy team, said
It is scandalous that Miliband’s low carbon ambitions, which have potential to create whole new green industries, are met with a budget that is only about half the amount the Chancellor allocated for bonuses for a bunch of failed RBS bankers.

Alison Doig, Christian Aid's Climate Policy Expert said
The government's plans are good news for UK energy security, jobs and progress towards a low-carbon economy. Our fear is that they will not achieve enough to help keep the global temperature rise below 2C and safeguard people in developing countries from dangerous climate change.

Andy Atkins, Friends of the Earth's Executive Director said
We're delighted that the Government has adopted many of the measures that Friends of the Earth has been calling for including feed-in tariffs and putting tackling climate change at the heart of energy regulator Ofgem's remit.
But bolder measures are still required to ensure that the UK plays its full part in combating climate change - we need more ambitious emissions cuts, greater levels of investment and an industrial strategy that really delivers.
