This Sunday sees the launch of the European’s Union Timber Regulation (EUTR), a landmark piece of environmental legislation aimed at preventing the trade in illegal timber and wood products.
This is the culmination of ten years work by the European Commission, NGOs like WWF, responsible industry, national governments across the European Union and civil society.
WWF would just like to extend a great big thanks to all its supporters who helped fund the research, the legal studies and reports highlighting the issue; also all of those that wrote to their MEPs and MPs, calling for this legislation.
We would also like to thank all the companies, across Europe that signed the industry statement calling on the European Commission to implement legislation outlawing the import of illegal timber and wood products.
We will be keeping in touch over the next two years to make sure that the necessary improvements are made to the legislation when it comes up for review in 2015.
