Tomorrow the European Commission will publish its proposals for Europe's climate and energy policy after 2020.
These proposals will form the basis for discussions between national governments ahead of a meeting of European leaders in March to decide a political agreement on the key measures.
You can help by joining in Avaaz's campaign and sending a message to Commission President Barroso, urging him to seal an ambitious European climate plan and secure a lasting legacy for his Commission.
Here is a suggestion for what to say, or choose your own words;
The following steps are necessary to ensure that the EU plays its full part in preventing highly dangerous climate change and preparing the Union for the coming era of scarce and expensive fossil fuels.
Step 1. The EU must set stringent targets for emission reductions in line with the latest climate science.
Step 2. The EU must also set targets for renewables and energy efficiency.
Step 3. In addition the EU must either radically reform the EU Emissions Trading Scheme or better still introduce other effective schemes such as Cap & Dividend or Cap & Share to ensure that fossil fuel use is capped in line with 1. above. A completely independent European Climate Commons Trust must be set up to administer the cap. Omitting step 3. is likely to render action on steps 1 & 2 above largely ineffective in reducing emissions.
These three steps are crucial for investment to create jobs and stimulate the green economy. Moreover effective action on Climate Change and on reducing dependency on fossil fuels is likely to be cost effective in the medium term and cheaper than inaction.
These steps would ensure a lasting legacy for your presidency of the Commission.
