Naomi Klein’s book This Changes Everything says that the only way we can avert climate change is to change our economy. Do we need to bring down capitalism to save the planet? Or can we just substitute renewables for fossil fuels in the existing system? What alliances can create enough power to make the changes we need?

2015 is a crucial year in the fight against climate change. This December, world leaders will meet at a UN summit in Paris to conclude negotiations for a new global deal to tackle climate change.
With the world climate summit in Paris in December, and huge climate marches in Edinburgh
and across the globe on Nov 28/29, our autumn public meeting will consider the relationship between climate change and transport … from trunk roads to cycling … from national politics to how we commute…
- We are looking for cyclists to ride with us from Edinburgh to Paris, or any part of the route.
- Provisional date of departure Nov 28. Estimated arrival Paris Dec 10.
- 13 days, 750 miles plus small detours to sleepovers. About 60 miles per day.
- Mass lobbying by the Eiffel Tower Dec 12
A breakfast forum which will include presentations by Pole to Paris organisers as well as individuals from science, business and environmental backgrounds, including Tom Ballentine, Chair of Stop Climate Chaos Scotland.
This event will be followed by a fun run leaving from the ECCI building at around 11am.
This event will signify the beginning of the UK relay run and we are encouraging as many people as possible to join in. The route will take the runners through the streets of Edinburgh (about 3-5km).
- Juliette Rousseau, coordinator of the Coalition Climat 21
- Richard Dixon, director of Friends of the Earth Scotland
- Jane Herbstritt, Global Justice Now
- Chaired by Stop Climate Chaos Scotland

The prospect of fracking for shale gas (and other unconventional forms of extraction) at an industrial scale looms over much of the UK. It is pitting communities against aggressive corporate and financial interests that have bet on its success, as well as their political backers. It threatens to deepen already serious national divisions and is putting local authorities in an impossible position. Our democratic systems are cracking under the strain.
