The influential House of Commons Energy and Climate Change Committee has released a report highlighting major flaws in proposed planning rules. Key among these is the proposal to dramatically weaken the Holford Rules, which help to protect England’s most beautiful landscapes from new pylons and overhead lines.

There were mixed results for countryside campaigners as Energy Secretary Chris Huhne set out the Government’s policy for energy. CPRE campaigners are celebrating the shelving of plans for two nuclear power stations in the Lake District, but warn that more needs to be done to stop the march of electricity pylons across our most important landscapes.
