The UN climate change talks will take place in Durban, South Africa from 29th November to 9th December 2011.

Time is running out for an ambitious global deal on climate change to be agreed, as the only agreement we currently have – the Kyoto Protocol – is due to end next year. We urgently need a follow-on agreement if we are to keep emissions under control and avoid the catastrophic effects of runaway global warming.

Email Chris Huhne MP, Energy & Climate Minister who will lead the UK delegation at the negotiations, to highlight the need a global deal on climate change to be agreed in Durban.

David Cameron will be giving his first speech on the environment since taking office next Thursday 26th April.

Together we can convince our Prime Minister to stand strong, and back targets to reduce EU emissions by 30% by 2020 in this key climate speech.

A stronger EU climate target will be crucial for increasing ambition at the next UN climate talks, but the preparatory work needs to be done now. And we need David Cameron to show his public support for a stronger EU target.

Help keep tar sands out of Europe

Tar sands produce 3-5 times the carbon emissions associated with crude oil production, bad news for a low carbon economy.

Yet the UK Government, under pressure from Canada which produces most of the world’s tar sands, is refusing to support an EU proposal that would effectively ban tar sands from European import.

We still have a chance to reverse our government’s position before the vote on 23 February.

Scotland’s Climate Change Act is world-leading. With a 42% emissions reduction target by 2020, it's in line with scientists' recommendations if we want to protect people and nature from the devastating impacts of climate change.

But while we're leading the way with our Climate Act, it'll be impossible to meet our commitments if there isn't adequate funding.

We must make sure that our government takes action to create a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Scotland, and a better world for us all.

A growing number of top companies are leading the way for a low carbon economy by calling for stronger European climate targets.

Yet a number of car companies, including VW, BMW, Peugeot, Ford and GM are failing to commit to leadership on this critical issue.

These businesses need to make a choice between the clean economy of the future and the old, dirty economy of the past.

It's time to tell them to join the race for a low carbon Europe!

Urgent action: email your MEP ahead of EU vote on emissions reduction targets

On Tuesday 5th July, the European Parliament will vote on whether Europe should commit to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2020 (the current target is a 20% reduction).

Although David Cameron has clearly stated the Conservative Party's position to support an increase in the EU targets, some rebel Tory MEPs may vote against it.

The EU must show leadership on the issue of climate change. We need to put as much pressure as possible on MEPs before Tuesday.

You can help do this using the buttons below either by asking David Cameron to put pressure on Conservative MEPs (action hosted by 38 degrees), or by e-mailing your local MEP directly (action hosted by Christian Aid) - or even better, you can do both!

And there was no climate question.

There will be two more debates in the next two weeks, so we need to grab these chances to put the leaders on the spot and show them – along with the rest of the UK – that we want them to commit to taking effective action on climate change.

Current EU commitments to 20% emissions cuts (based on 1990 levels), rising to 30% if a strong global deal is agreed, are simply not enough.

The target for the EU needs to be at least 40% if we want to avoid the danger level of a 2°C rise in global warming. Please write to Gordon Brown using his CAFOD action asking him to put pressure on the other EU leaders to sign up to the required 40% emissions reduction.

Is your council serious about climate change?

The latest science tells us that carbon emissions need to fall now and fall fast to avoid dangerous climate change.

But the good news is that local action to cut CO2 will boost the local economy, create jobs and slash your fuel bills.

Councils have a big part to play in tackling climate change and we want them to do much more right now. They must commit to cutting emissions in their area by at least 40 per cent by 2020.

Councils can reach this goal if they get more support from national government.

As our old dirty coal power stations begin to phase out, we need to switch to clean green energy sources.
