Email Chris Huhne to call for an urgent global agreement on climate change

November 2011

The UN climate change talks will take place in Durban, South Africa from 29th November to 9th December 2011.

Time is running out for an ambitious global deal on climate change to be agreed, as the only agreement we currently have – the Kyoto Protocol – is due to end next year. We urgently need a follow-on agreement if we are to keep emissions under control and avoid the catastrophic effects of runaway global warming.

Email Chris Huhne MP, Energy & Climate Minister who will lead the UK delegation at the negotiations, to highlight the need a global deal on climate change to be agreed in Durban.

Support the Big Climate Connection - e-mail your MP

You are invited to join thousands of people, in hundreds of constituencies throughout the country who will visit their MPs and tell them they care about climate change. <a href="http://stopclimatechaos.org/the-big-connection"Sign up to the Big Climate Connection">Sign up to join a lobby meeting with your MP.

Ask David Cameron to support stronger climate targets!

David Cameron will be giving his first speech on the environment since taking office next Thursday 26th April.

Together we can convince our Prime Minister to stand strong, and back targets to reduce EU emissions by 30% by 2020 in this key climate speech.

A stronger EU climate target will be crucial for increasing ambition at the next UN climate talks, but the preparatory work needs to be done now. And we need David Cameron to show his public support for a stronger EU target.

Can you take 2 minutes to email David Cameron to ask him to stand strong on emissions targets?

Help keep tar sands out of Europe

Tar sands produce 3-5 times the carbon emissions associated with crude oil production, bad news for a low carbon economy.

Yet the UK Government, under pressure from Canada which produces most of the world’s tar sands, is refusing to support an EU proposal that would effectively ban tar sands from European import.

We still have a chance to reverse our government’s position before the vote on 23 February.

Tell Norman Baker and Nick Clegg there is no place for dirty oil in a green European Union!

Send a special email to your MSP

October 2011

If one of your MSPs is listed below, you have an important role to play in helping Scotland move towards a low carbon future.

The Scottish Government has published their draft budget, but it does not currently fund even the minimum activities required if we’re to meet the greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets in our Climate Change Act.

This group of MSPs has high influence when it comes to reducing Scotland’s emissions – if your MSP is listed below, please take action today.

Speak out for climate justice at the WDM speaker tour

If you don’t want to wait until December to speak out for climate justice, check out the WDM ‘Africa Demands Climate Justice’ speaker tour.

This is a rare opportunity to hear from two activists who seldom visit the UK. Both speakers work on the front line of the fight for environmental justice in South Africa, and as such are well placed to give campaigners in this country a sense of the urgency around the UN talks in Durban in December.

Ask the government to put its money where its mouth is

Scotland’s Climate Change Act is world-leading. With a 42% emissions reduction target by 2020, it's in line with scientists' recommendations if we want to protect people and nature from the devastating impacts of climate change.

But while we're leading the way with our Climate Act, it'll be impossible to meet our commitments if there isn't adequate funding.

We must make sure that our government takes action to create a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Scotland, and a better world for us all.

The race is on for a low carbon Europe!

A growing number of top companies are leading the way for a low carbon economy by calling for stronger European climate targets.

Yet a number of car companies, including VW, BMW, Peugeot, Ford and GM are failing to commit to leadership on this critical issue.

These businesses need to make a choice between the clean economy of the future and the old, dirty economy of the past.

It's time to tell them to <a href="http://stopclimatechaos.org/30pc/action"join the race for a low carbon Europe!">join the race for a low carbon Europe!

Urgent action: email your MEP ahead of EU vote on emissions reduction targets

On Tuesday 5th July, the European Parliament will vote on whether Europe should commit to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2020 (the current target is a 20% reduction).

Although David Cameron has clearly stated the Conservative Party's position to support an increase in the EU targets, some rebel Tory MEPs may vote against it.

The EU must show leadership on the issue of climate change. We need to put as much pressure as possible on MEPs before Tuesday.

You can help do this using the buttons below either by asking David Cameron to put pressure on Conservative MEPs (action hosted by 38 degrees), or by e-mailing your local MEP directly (action hosted by Christian Aid) - or even better, you can do both!

Ask your Scottish election candidates to take climate change seriously

This action is now closed

As the Scottish elections approach, now is the time to put pressure on our future MSPs to ensure Scotland makes its fair contribution to tackle climate change and achieve the targets in the Scottish Climate Change Act. Parties and their candidates need to know that there are voters out there calling for action on climate change.

Take action with WWF: Scotland must walk the talk

Don't let Scotland go backwards on tackling climate change

Get your Climate Question into the leaders’ debates

The three contenders to be Prime Minister faced each other in a televised debate for the first time on Thursday 15th April.

And there was no climate question.

There will be two more debates in the next two weeks, so we need to grab these chances to put the leaders on the spot and show them – along with the rest of the UK – that we want them to commit to taking effective action on climate change.

Keep Scotland ambitious!

Scotland’s plans for tackling climate change are the most ambitious in the world, thanks to the efforts of thousands of Stop Climate Chaos Scotland supporters. We need your help to keep it that way.

The Scottish Government will soon be making its proposal about how the ambitious targets in the Climate Change Act can be met – it’s the crucial first stage of putting the Act into practice.

Let’s urge the government to keep taking a lead on climate change and to propose early and ambitious cuts for greenhouse gas emissions in Scotland.

Current EU commitments to 20% emissions cuts (based on 1990 levels), rising to 30% if a strong global deal is agreed, are simply not enough.

The target for the EU needs to be at least 40% if we want to avoid the danger level of a 2°C rise in global warming. Please write to Gordon Brown using his CAFOD action asking him to put pressure on the other EU leaders to sign up to the required 40% emissions reduction.

Get Serious About CO2

Is your council serious about climate change?

The latest science tells us that carbon emissions need to fall now and fall fast to avoid dangerous climate change.

But the good news is that local action to cut CO2 will boost the local economy, create jobs and slash your fuel bills.

Councils have a big part to play in tackling climate change and we want them to do much more right now. They must commit to cutting emissions in their area by at least 40 per cent by 2020.

Councils can reach this goal if they get more support from national government.

End Our Reliance on Dirty Power

Ensure new power sources are emissions reductive!

As our old dirty coal power stations begin to phase out, we need to switch to clean green energy sources. A carbon emissions performance standard (EPS) is an effective way of regulating emissions by setting the maximum amount of carbon dioxide that can be emitted per unit of energy produced by a power station (g CO2/kwh). This would cap emissions from power generation.

Upon the advice of the Climate Change Committee, an Early Day Motion has been proposed. To keep global warming below 2 degrees C, this will:

Tearfund Carbon Fast

Fast > verb: abstain from all or some kinds of food or drink, especially as a religious observance.
Carbon Fast > noun: fast and pray with Tearfund to cut your carbon use and help protect poor people from climate change.
We’re on a mission this Lent not only to add Carbon Fast to your vocabulary but to get you putting these two little words into practice as well.
Each day from Wednesday 25 February until Saturday 11 April, we have daily actions to help you reduce your carbon footprint.

Take People & Planet's RBS fossil fuels action

The Royal Bank of Scotland (which owns NatWest) has pumped more money than any other UK high street bank into the fossil fuel industry - $16 billion into companies engaged in coal projects in the past 2 years.

To take action on this, you can email RBS chief executive Stephen Hester and the UK government from the People & Planet's website. Tell them to stop financing climate chaos.

Take UNICEF's email your MP action

UNICEF have a great action where you can email your MP about green energy. It is particularly relevant as we need to be keeping the pressure on government to implement the Climate Change Act through investment in renewable energy, and not just by trading in 'carbon credits'.
